811 introduced in La Mauricie and Centre-du-Québec 2006-10-31

Now only three digits to reach Info-Health

For the past several years, Quebecers have counted on the services of the Info-Health line. When in need, people can call a local number to reach a qualified nurse who will provide recommendations relative to their health issues. The 811 service is free of charge and available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Info Health’s main goal is to reduce the use of emergency room services.

Beginning November 1, 2006, the Government of Québec will conduct a pilot project in the 04 region (La Mauricie and Centre-du-Québec), implementing the 811 service, which will help residents access Info-Health professionals directly.

The Government of Québec will then make the 811 service available throughout the province at the start of 2007.

The 811 service does not replace the 911 emergency service and does not serve the same purpose. For example, the 911 service will trace the address from where the call is being placed in the event that the caller is not able to speak. The 811 service will not trace the call. If necessary, the Info-Health representative can choose to transfer the call to the 911 emergency service.

The CRTC has reserved the 811 number for all of Canada. However, each provincial government is responsible for the implementation the 811 service on their territory. No information regarding the dates at which the service will be implemented in other Canadian provinces is available at this time.

It is important to note that citizens will not be charged for this service. Télébec and the Government of Québec will jointly cover the costs.
