Digital wireless service now available for citizens of Chisasibi 2005-11-03

Today, Claude Vachon, Vice-President of Network Services, officially inaugurated the first digital wireless service in Chisasibi, in presence of some members of the community.

Thanks to a new digital wireless cell integrated into the site of the future EM-1, service is now available to more than 3 500 members of the community. In order to ensure optimal service, a tower measuring 91 metres high was built in the area. Télébec has invested a total of $865 000 in this project.

The new digital wireless cell as named by the elder concil of Chisasibi by the name of Kaanaashkutaau, which means the land were the community was build.

"We are very proud of this project, which will greatly improve communications for the citizens of Chisasibi. This new infrastructure will help Télébec establish a solid relationship with the community and was developed thanks to the Band Council’s excellent collaboration,” said Claude Vachon.

Télébec Mobilité products and services are available locally through Chistapitin, located on Rue Principale and managed by Albert Rondeau. It is interesting to note that thanks to the creation of this new point of sale, Eric Rondeau, the son of M. Rondeau who was working in the cellular phone industry in the Ottawa region, was able to return to his community – which just goes to show that Télébec really does bring people together! He will be in charge of the authorized dealer.

The new cellular site is entirely digital and will therefore ensure many of the advantages digital technology offers: call security, enhanced reliability of the technology, longer cellular phone battery life and improved technological applications.

The new infrastructure is part of the “new generation” wireless network that improves service for Télébec Mobilité customers thanks to its 3 main features:

1. Better throughput: Offers quicker and easier access to data, reduces connection and download time, and ensures better mobile productivity.

2. Transmission by packet switching: Customers are now billed based only on the data they send and receive, instead of being billed for the time they are connected to the network.

3. Permanent connection:

  • Makes communication simpler by not having to establish a new connection each time data is sent or received;
  • Instantly delivers email and transmits data without connecting to the network each time.

And because of the 1X network, Télébec Mobilité customers will now benefit from these new services:

  • Mobile browser: Access to enhanced Internet content through the telephone screen.
  • Télégr@f: Short message service that allows customers with compatible cellular phones to exchange messages
  • Email (sending and receiving)
  • Picture messaging (sending and receiving photos, downloading images to personalize phones or create albums)
  • Downloading ringtones, images for screensavers and games
  • MSN Messenger
  • VIDEO messaging
  • Mobile TV
