Télébec offers high-speed Internet access to fourTémiscamingue municipalities 2005-09-20

Télébec is proud to announce that, since this morning, four Témiscamingue municipalities now have access to high-speed Internet. This new service is part of the Broadband for Rural and Northern Development Pilot Program, which was initiated by the federal government.

Access is provided to citizens of Angliers, Laverlochère, St-Eugène de Guigues and Notre-Dame du Nord as part of a project developed by the Centre des technologies de l’information et des communications de l’Abitibi-Témiscamingue (CTICAT) [Information and communications technology centre of Abitibi-Témiscamingue].

As a partner in the project, Télébec will help provide high-speed Internet access to a total of 46 of the region’s municipalities thanks to the development of its 1 500-km fibre optic network. High-speed Internet access will be available through either the cable or telephone service. The fibre optic network will be routed towards 350 governmental and municipal offices, schools and Algonquin communities.

A project of over $20 million

The federal and provincial governments, Télébec, and the school boards and municipalities have jointly contributed the $20 million investment necessary to fund the project.

Télébec has invested $5.1 million in this project, which will improve the quality of life of thousands of citizens who will now benefit from leading-edge technology.

High-speed Internet will have many important uses including telemedicine, distance education, teleworking and electronic commerce.

Opening the way to a multitude of telecommunications services, the broadband network was created and developed thanks to the collaboration between private enterprise, governments and local communities – a partnership valued by Télébec.
