Digital Wireless Technology Now Accessible in the Magdalen Islands 2005-02-02

February 2, 2005 - Thanks to an investment of $550,000, Télébec Mobilité today announced another milestone in its expansion plan, replacing its analog service with digital 1XRTT technology in the Magdalen Islands.

The enhanced network will improve the wireless experience of Télébec Mobilité’s digital customers, as well as allow them access to a multitude of advanced services.

The latest network enhancements include the commissioning of a brand-new site at Grande Entrée, as well as migration to digital technology of the Butte du vent, Bassin and Grosse Îles sites.

"With the deployment of this new service today, our customers are taking a big step into the future. They now have the benefit of a faster, simpler, more universal, and more efficient network, as well as a broader range of advanced services," observed Télébec President and CEO Roch Dubé.

It should also be noted that this is the first use of made of the new marine cable linking Anse-à-Beaufils (Percé) to Anse-À-Bourgault (Étang-du-Nord).

The "new generation" high-speed wireless network will improve the experience of Télébec Mobilité customers with three main features:

  • Improved bandwidth: which allows faster, more convenient data access, and shorter connection and download times, thus generally enhancing the mobility customer’s productivity.
  • Packet-switched data transmission: which means that the customer is only billed for the data sent and received rather than for the time spent connected to the network.
  • Permanent connection which means :
    • greater simplicity, by not having to reconnect to send and receive data;
    • instant delivery of e-mail and other data, by not having to dial into the network each time.

The 1X network also allows Télébec Mobilité customers access to more advanced options such as:

  • Mobile Navigator: a mobile browser option that allows Internet access from a wireless phone
  • Telegr@f: text messaging service that allows users with compatible cell phones to exchange messages.
  • Email: sending and receiving;
  • Photo messaging: (sending and receiving photos, downloading images to personalize phones or create albums)
  • Downloading ring tones, screensavers and games.

"The investments of recent months have strengthened our reputation as the mobility leader in our territory. Other investments can be expected in the future; on the one hand, to overlay our existing analog network with a digital network that will make it easier to introduce future technologies and, on the other, to build new sites in order to expand our digital wireless coverage. We plan to continuously upgrade our network to keep pace with market trends," asserted Sylvie Couture, Vice-President, Network Engineering and Chief Technology Officer.

"Activation of the 1X high-speed wireless network represents a major milestone in our digital network operations program. It is the first phase in the deployment of third-generation wireless technology. Even more important, it is a concrete means of improving our customers’ wireless experience, which is a priority for Télébec," concluded Roch Dubé.
