Transitioning toward wind energy: Télébec inaugurates its first clean energy powered telecommunications tower 2004-12-16

December 16, 2005 - Today Télébec inaugurates its very first wind energy powered telecommunications tower, on the Lac Julian site, situated 40 km south of the Petite Grande Rivière, on the border of Northern Québec and Nunavik.

“With this pilot project, Télébec is taking a significant step to reduce its environmental impacts. Should the results prove to be conclusive, we will have found a sustainable means by which to service our vast territory that extends some 750 000 km2, a large part of which is in outlying areas with a low population density” declared Roch Dubé, President and Chief Executive Officer of Télébec.

Sylvie Couture, Vice-President, Network Operations and Chief Technology Officer at Télébec, added that “thanks to the support of the Government of Canada, Télébec is contributing to the accelerated implementation of clean energy applications: an action that is directly in line with the policy to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Also, continued Ms. Couture, our investment will be made profitable within three years, as our annual fuel cost and transportation, maintenance and handling expenses are estimated to be between 30 000$ and 40 000$.”

“With the Lac Julian pilot project, and by actively supporting the development of a regional expertise in energy production, Télébec is fulfilling its mission to invest in Québec’s regions,” concluded Mr. Dubé.
